Antidepressants may make bones brittle
Many people take antidepressants to treat symptoms of depression,
but a growing number of studies suggest that the drugs may be
putting patients at increased risk for fractures. In one study,
researchers found that older women who took antidepressants had a
30 percent increased risk of spine fracture and a 20 percent
increased risk of any type of fracture. Another study found that
daily users of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors--a type of
antidepressant--had twice the risk of bone fracture as those who
didn't take the drugs.
