Bipolar disorder may be overdiagnosed

Recent studies suggest that bipolar disorder (BPD) may be under-diagnosed, but new research has found that overdiagnosis of the condition may be an equal or greater problem. Researchers looked at 700 psychiatric patients who were given a comprehensive psychiatric interview (SCID). They were also asked if they'd previously been diagnosed with BPD by a healthcare provider. Of the patients who'd been previously diagnosed with BPD, fewer than half were also diagnosed with the disorder by the SCID. Experts say the overdiagnosis of BPD could lead to unnecessary use of medications and the risk of harmful side effects.
