Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia share genetic roots
A new study has found that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BPD)
have a shared genetic "signature" that may explain why the
conditions have similar long-term symptoms. Scientists found 78
abnormal genes that affect nervous system development and cell
death in common between schizophrenia and BPD. Experts say the
discovery of these genetic "overlaps" may guide researchers toward
new and more effective treatments for both mental health
conditions.
