Brain patterns may predict schizophrenia behaviors
British researchers may have found a way to predict how people who
suffer from schizophrenia will behave during a psychotic episode.
Investigators compared the brain activity of 15 healthy volunteers
before and after they were given ketamine, a psychosis drug that
mimics schizophrenia symptoms. They found that increased brain
activity during some tasks in the normal state predicted behaviors
such as strange perceptions or disordered thoughts after
participants took the drug. Scientists say these findings may
explain why schizophrenia symptoms vary widely and may suggest new
personalized treatments.
