Caregivers say grief is the greatest burden of Alzheimer's disease
For many Alzheimer's caregivers, the most difficult aspect of caregiving is managing their own emotions. Researchers in Indiana questioned 400 caregivers and found that more than 80 percent of them identified grief as their greatest burden. Experts say there are two parts to this sadness--anticipatory grief and ambiguous loss. Anticipatory grief occurs when caregivers and loved-ones realize the Alzheimer's patient is terminally ill. Ambiguous loss refers to the difficult situation of losing a connection with a parent or spouse who is still alive but no longer psychologically present.
