Celebrex, naproxen won't prevent dementia
A new study suggests that the painkillers Celebrex and naproxen may not prevent dementia in patients who are prone to the disease. In fact, researchers say naproxen, sold under the brand names Aleve and Naprosyn, may even harm brain function. In a study of 2,117 men and women, investigators found no evidence to suggest the drugs protected against dementia. Patients on Celebrex were pulled from the study due to the negative heart effects seen in some users of the pain med, while those who took naproxen had lower cognitive function scores than the people who had taken a placebo.
