Cherries may ease arthritis

New research suggests that tart cherries may offer relief to people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. A new study by University of Michigan researchers suggests a cherry-enriched diet reduced inflammation markers in animals by up to 50 percent. Scientists say anthocyanins--which also give cherries their red color--that are responsible for this anti-inflammatory effect. Other studies also suggest antioxidant-rich foods such as cherries may help reduce levels of nitric oxide, a compound associated with both types of arthritis.
