Doctors explain heart screening advice for ADHD patients

The American Heart Association recently recommended that children taking stimulant medications for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder have an electrocardiogram to detect heart abnormalities. The group clarified this recommendation after patients and doctors were confused about how to interpret it. The AHA said that a child's physician is the best person to decide whether a patient needs an electrocardiogram. It is not mandatory to obtain one and treatment for ADHD should not be withheld because an ECG is not done.
