Experts: Anti-TNF meds may boost infection risk

Medications used to treat such conditions as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and inflammatory bowel disease may boost patients' risk of infection, experts say. A new survey of infectious disease doctors has found that anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) drugs such as Enbrel, Remicade, and Humira were linked to a greater risk of serious infections in users. Among the infections reported were MRSA (Staphylococcus aureus), Darling's disease (histoplasmosis), and nontuberculosis mycobacterial infections. Anti-TNF drugs have already been linked to an increased risk of tuberculosis.
