FDA approves artery plaque device

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new device that helps doctors assess a person's risk of having a heart attack. The InfraReDx LipiScan NIR Catheter Imaging System works by inserting a catheter with a fiber-optic laser light into the artery and measuring the light reflected back from the artery wall. This helps doctors assess the fatty makeup of the plaque that has built up in the artery, a finding that helps the doctors find out a person's heart attack risk.
