FDA approves new drug-coated stent
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the Xience
drug-coated stent for people with coronary artery disease. The
Xience stent is an artery-opening, metal-mesh tube that's coated
with everolimus, a drug that helps prevent the blood vessel from
becoming blocked again with plaque. The stent's maker, Abbott, said
clinical testing showed the stent reduced the risk of a major
cardiac event such as heart attack, by 45 percent, compared with a
competing stent.
