FDA orders warning on older antipsychotics

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered a "black box" warning to be put on the label of some older antipsychotic drugs. These meds are often used to treat aggression and other behavioral problems in patients who suffer from dementia, but it may also boost the death risk for those patients, the FDA said. Experts say this does not mean antipsychotics should never be used for patients with dementia, but that doctors and family members should be aware of the risks.
