FDA worried about wider Fentora use

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is concerned that wider use of the pain med Fentora could lead to widespread use--and abuse--of the drug. Fentora is currently only approved for use by cancer patients whose pain is not controlled by other opioid medications alone. Now drugmaker Cephalon has asked the FDA to approve the med for patients with severe chronic pain. FDA officials say the agency has received many reports of serious adverse events--including deaths--in patients using Fentora, and that Fentora-containing meds have a history of abuse. But Cephalon says the drug, when used correctly, is safe and effective.
