Gastric band surgery may worsen reflux
New research has found that while gastric bypass weight-loss
surgery may help improve acid reflux, gastric banding surgery may
make it worse. The problem, researchers say, is that a gastric band
creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach where acid can get
caught. The study, published in
The American Journal of Gastroenterology, found that gastric
banding can cause reflux disease to develop, or make it worse in
people who had the disease before surgery.
