Genes may influence blood pressure meds
Researchers at the University of Miami have found that a person's genetic makeup may affect how his or her body responds to some hypertension medications. Scientists studied 38,462 people with hypertension who underwent genetic testing and were given one of four different types of blood pressure meds. The researchers found that people with a specific variation of the NPPA gene responded better to some of the medications than others. Experts say studies such this one could one day lead to so-called 'personalized medicine,' in which medications are matched to a patient's genetic type.
