Group criticizes spike in psychiatric prescriptions to kids

The Vermont Association for Mental Health believes that psychiatric medications are being prescribed to children too frequently, replacing counseling with drugs to treat mental health problems. The group's executive director said that the state spent almost $10 million on psychiatric drugs to more than 6,000 children in a six-month period last year. He also questioned the use of medications not formally approved for children.
