Health Canada issues advisory about bipolar, epilepsy med
Health Canada has issued an advisory about carbamazepine, a drug
used to treat epilepsy, mania, bipolar disorder, and the facial
disorder trigeminal neuralgia. The report warns users of the risk
of serious skin reactions in some carbamazepine users. These
conditions have been known to occur very rarely with the drug, but
the risk is approximately 10 times higher in Asian countries than
in Western countries. A genetic test can identify carbamazepine
users who may be at risk for the skin conditions.
