Melanoma cases surge among young women
Researchers say there has been a surge in skin cancer rates among
young women. In 1973, there were 5.5 cases of melanoma for every
100,000 young women. By 1980 that rate had doubled, and it went up
another 50 percent by 2004. During the same period of time,
melanoma rates for young men levelled off. Experts say the increase
may be due to the increased use of tanning beds and over-exposure
to the sun.
