Study: Mental illness leads to lower income

A new report has found that serious mental illness (SMI) costs Americans at least $193 billion in lost earnings alone. Researchers defined SMI as mood and anxiety disorders that significantly limited a person's ability to function at least 30 days per year, including any condition linked to suicidal behaviors or frequent violent acts. Overall, the study showed that people with SMI reported receiving about 40 percent less in earnings than those without serious mental disorders.
