Mom's heartburn meds may up kids' asthma risk

Heartburn is a common problem among pregnant women, but a new study suggests that taking acid blockers such as Pepcid, Zantac, Nexium, and Protonix during pregnancy may increase a child's risk of asthma. A review of data on nearly 30,000 children found a 51-percent increase in wheezing and other asthma symptoms among kids whose mothers had taken heartburn meds while pregnant. Experts say more studies are needed, but they recommend that women who are pregnant take meds only when symptoms interfere with their quality of life.
