New cholesterol test may better predict heart risks
A major study has found that measuring proteins that carry
cholesterol may help doctors predict patients' heart attack risk
better than measuring their cholesterol. An international research
team looked at the ratio between two proteins, one called ApoB,
which carries bad cholesterol, and one called ApoA1, which carries
good cholesterol. They found that the ratio of ApoB to ApoA1
accounted for 54 percent of patients' risk of heart attack, while
the standard good/bad cholesterol ratio accounted for only 37
percent of the risk.
