New compact heart device approved
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new
compact heart assist device designed to fit women and smaller men.
The HeartMate II Left Ventricular Assist System is three inches in
length and weighs about one pound. In a clinical trial of 126
people, 57 percent survived to undergo a heart transplant, which
the FDA said is comparable to larger heart assist devices, which
often did not fit in these smaller patients.
