New hope for vascular depression
Researchers are working to unravel the mystery of a type of depression caused by a loss of blood flow to the brain, and they are also developing new treatments for the condition. Vascular depression usually affects people over age 60 and is often linked to high blood pressure. Investigators at Cornell using MRI technology found that people with high blood pressure and depression did not respond well to treatment with antidepressants, a finding which could lead to more effective medications for these patients. Meanwhile, scientists at the University of Iowa using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation found that the treatment significantly improved remission rates in vascular depression patients.
