Study: Obesity raises men's hip OA risk

Men who are overweight are much more likely to need a hip replacement than men who aren't carrying extra weight, researchers say, but this is not the case for women. Investigators compared the weights of 1,473 people who had undergone hip or knee replacement with those of people who had not had a joint replaced. They found that overweight women were no more likely to have had a hip replacement than women of normal weight, but men were. Men who were obese were 70 percent more likely to have had a hip replaced. Overweight people of both sexes were much more likely to have had knee replacement surgery, and the more overweight they were the more likely it was.
