Many people don't think twice about using over-the-counter rubs and ointments, assuming that non-prescription pain treatments, hair removal products, and cosmetics can't be unsafe. But experts say ointments containing such ingredients as lidocaine, methyl salicylate, and hydrocortisone can pose serious risks if used incorrectly.
