Painkiller use up 88 percent, research suggests

An analysis of data from the Drug Enforcement Administration has found that the amount of five major prescription painkillers sold at U.S. retail stores rose 88 percent between 1997 and 2005. More than 200,000 pounds of codeine, morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and meperidine were purchased in 2005 alone, experts say. The analysis suggests that oxycodone--the chemical used in OxyContin--is responsible for most of the pain-med use increase.
