Pediatricians: Heart test not needed to take ADHD meds
The American Academy of Pediatrics says that children taking
stimulants for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder do not need
a heart test before using the medications. This contradicts the
advice from the American Heart Association earlier this year that
kids have an electrocardiogram before taking stimulants. The
pediatrician group says that requiring an EKG would force healthy
children to have unnecessary heart tests and could limit access to
ADHD treatments. The group suggests a physical exam and family
history should be used to screen children for heart trouble
instead.
