Reflux, colorectal cancer risk rise with BMI
Several new studies have shed light on the relationship between
obesity, acid reflux, and cancer. Researchers say that gaining
weight--particularly around the middle--not only increases your
risk for reflux and Barrett's esophagus, but for colorectal cancer
as well. In one study, Japanese researchers found that patients
with a high body mass index (BMI) were more likely to have
precancerous growths in their colon than normal-weight
participants. Another study found that weight loss through calorie
restriction or bariatric surgery (particularly Roux-en-Y bypass)
was also associated with relief of reflux pain.
