Researchers find way to make tumors defenseless
A special enzyme called telomerase protects cancer cells from heat
and radiation, but a new study suggests that it may be possible to
break down this defense. Telomerase becomes active when heat is
applied, experts say, and that makes it more difficult for some
cancer treatments to affect cells. But a new compound called
GRN163L appeared to shut down this enzyme in a recent study, and it
made it possible for radiation to kill the cancer cells.
