Scientists look at genes, environment, and depression

Scientists are studying the links between genes, environmental factors, and depression. Experts in the field of epigenetics--which looks at how environmental factors can change gene function--say this field greatly affects depression and the workings of antidepressants. In new studies, researchers are looking at how such environmental factors as stress, diet, and the care of mothers can change genes and contribute to behavioral problems. The scientists say their work may lead to more effective antidepressants.
