Study: Bipolar teens at higher risk for smoking, drug use

A new study at Massachusetts General Hospital has added to the evidence that bipolar disorder increases a teen's risk of smoking and substance abuse. Researchers say their finding suggests that young people with the disorder need to be carefully screened for smoking and substance use and abuse. They say the study also shows that adolescents known to abuse drugs and alcohol--especially those who binge use--should be assessed for bipolar disorder.
