Statin use jumps more than 150 percent
A report by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has
found that the use of cholesterol-lowering statins rose by 156
percent from 2000 to 2005. Outpatient prescriptions for statins
such as Zocor, Lipitor, Crestor, and Prevachol rose from about 90
million in 2000 to nearly 174 million in 2005. The report also
showed that the number of people who take the cholesterol-lowering
drugs increased from 15.8 million to 29.7 million people.
