Stroke rehab harder for RA patients

The swelling and pain that accompanies rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and lupus appears to interfere with stroke rehabilitation, University of Texas researchers say. Investigators reviewed data on 47,853 stroke patients who underwent in-hospital stroke rehabilitation. Of these, 368 patients had RA and 119 had lupus. The researchers found that the average Functional Independence Measure ratings were lower, both at discharge and at follow-up, for RA and lupus patients than for stroke patients who didn't suffer from one of these conditions.
