Study: Gene causes statin-related muscle pain
Some people who take cholesterol-lowering statins experience muscle pain or weakness, and British researchers say they may have discovered why. The scientists scanned genes for a variation in the DNA code called SLC01B1variant. They found that people who had an abnormality in this gene were more likely to suffer the statin-related muscle pain and weakness--known as myopathy--than people who had normal genes. Experts say this discovery may help doctors screen patients to find out who is at greatest risk of experiencing myopathy from statin use.
