Study gives "troubling" results about Vytorin

A new trial on the cholesterol drug Vytorin has produced mixed results that experts say are "troubling." In the study, Vytorin--which is a combination of Zetia and Zocor--was effective at lowering the risk of ischemic events. But investigators say the drug did not slow the progression of aortic valve stenosis--which causes blockages in heart valves--or reduce the overall risk of major cardiovascular events better than a placebo. Researchers also found that the rate of new cancers was 50 percent higher in study patients taking Vytorin.
