Study: Newer RA meds help immune system
Some medications used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may have a
powerful--and previously unknown--effect on the immune system,
University of Rochester Medical Center scientists say. Anti-TNF
drugs--which include Enbrel, Humira, and Remicade--help reduce the
levels of abnormal B cells, which play a role in autoimmune
diseases such as RA and lupus. Researchers say their discovery may
mean that anti-TNF drugs may be helping improve patients' health in
ways that previously hadn't been recognized.
