Study: Patients more likely to stay on Lipitor

Drugmaker Pfizer is reporting that patients who take the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor are more likely to stay on the medication than those given the generic form of Zocor. This finding is based on a study of 186,000 patients in a large U.S. managed healthcare claims database. Experts at Pfizer, which makes Lipitor, say this finding is significant both because stopping statins has been linked with an increase in heart attacks and strokes, and because there is increasing pressure for doctors to switch patients to cheaper, generic drugs.
