Study: Quitting smoking is contagious
Researchers say it appears that when one person quits smoking, it causes a "ripple effect" that encourages others to quit. A new study in The New England Journal of Medicine found that if a spouse stops smoking, his or her partner is 67 percent less likely to continue smoking. If a friend kicks the habit, it's about 36 percent less likely that his friends will keep smoking. When a sibling gives up cigarettes, the risk of smoking decreases by 25 percent in her brothers and sisters. And smoking risk drops by 34 percent if a co-worker in a small office quits smoking.
