Study: Two meds better than one for hypertension

A new study has found that combining an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor with a calcium channel blocker in patients with high blood pressure who are at high risk for cardiovascular complications reduces these patients' risk of heart problems. The large trial compared high-risk patients who were given either a combination pill of an ACE inhibitor and a calcium channel blocker to those given an ACE inhibitor and a diuretic. The ACE inhibitor, calcium channel blocker combo pill more than doubled the number of patients who managed to get their hypertension under control, and it also resulted in a 20-percent reduction in the risks of death, heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems.
