Study: Treating PTSD helps kids overcome grief

Many believe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) only affects people who've experienced or witness a major trauma or violence. But experts say children who lose a parent may experience PTSD as well, and that treating this condition first may help the children deal with their grief. California researchers studied 100 children, some of whom spent a weekend at a camp designed to offer treatment for kids suffering from PTSD. The investigators found that children who did not attend the camp were 4.5 times more likely to continue experiencing PTSD symptoms and 3.6 times more likely to experience severe grief than those who did attend the camp.
