Ultrasound may help predict artery disease

New research suggests that intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) may not only effectively monitor the development of atherosclerosis; it may also help predict a person's odds of having a heart attack or other cardiovascular event. By using a special catheter with an ultrasound "sensor," IVUS creates images of the plaque inside arteries and allows the various components of the plaque to be identified. Researchers say this information may help doctors decide how far coronary disease has progressed and if more aggressive treatments with statins or other therapies may be needed.
