Virtual reality therapy may ease PTSD

Scientists working with Iraq war veterans say that a combination of a new virtual reality therapy and medications may help ease post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The virtual reality treatment uses a helmet and headphones to expose PTSD patients to reenactments of sights, sounds, smells, and movements from their traumatic experiences. In the study, 24 patients who suffered from a PTSD symptom that caused them to startle at loud noises showed a 75-percent decrease in the symptom after six months of treatment with the virtual reality therapy and medications.
