Vitamin D may protect IBD patients' bones

An increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures are common in patients who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but new research suggests vitamin D may help keep bones healthy. In a study of patients with IBD, researchers found that those who had the lowest bone mineral density also had the lowest levels of vitamin D. When the two-year study was completed, those who had increased their vitamin D level were found to have increased their bone density as well.
