New med helps when statins aren't enough

Researchers say an experimental drug may give patients who are taking statins an added weapon in their fight against heart disease. Darapladib works by blocking levels of an enzyme in artery plaque that makes the plaque more likely to block blood flow. In a recent study of 1,000 statin users, patients who were also given darapladib showed reduced blood levels of substances linked to inflammation. The scientists say this suggests that the drug may reduce plaque inflammation and therefore lower rates of clot formation and heart attacks among patients with heart disease.
