Genes boost RA, lupus risk

Scientists have identified two genes that boost the risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and lupus. One gene--known as STAT4--increases a person's risk for developing both of the autoimmune diseases by 30 percent to 60 percent. The other, TRAF1-C5, ups a person's risk for developing RA. Researchers say these discoveries may lead to new ways of predicting and treating RA.
