Immunosuppressant drugs used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may leave older patients at higher risk of infections, a new Mayo Clinic study suggests. Researchers studied 300 patients with IBD and found that people over the age of 50 were three times more likely to develop opportunistic infections than younger patients. Experts say this means that seniors should consider seeking medical help at the first sign of an infection.
